MPs wish to question Rupert Murdoch after a secret tape recording emerged of him expressing regret over cooperating with police investigating his British newspapers.
The Metropolitan Police has also taken an interest in the tape, which recorded Murdoch reassuring his journalists that the culture of paying police officers for information has been “going on a hundred years”. He also labelled the police investigation into his newspapers “incompetent”.
The Met Police has contacted Exaro News, the website which published the recordings, for a copy of recordings to investigate the suspicion that it “may contain evidence of conspiring to commit misconduct in public office”.
Murdoch has been invited to answer new questions from the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee to discuss the comments, although a date has yet to be arranged.
